The retrial of Harvey Weinstein took a dramatic turn on Thursday when a mistrial was declared on a remaining rape charge after the jury foreperson refused to continue deliberations. The split jury had already returned a partial verdict the day before, convicting Weinstein of a criminal sex act while acquitting him on another charge involving a separate victim.
The stalled deliberations centered on the testimony of Jessica Mann, who alleged that Weinstein raped her during what she described as a complicated and abusive relationship. Juror conflict behind closed doors became increasingly visible, culminating in the foreperson expressing fear and emotional exhaustion.
Weinstein, 73, has denied all charges. His lawyer, Arthur Aidala, condemned the deliberation process and said an appeal is forthcoming. Prosecutors, meanwhile, expressed their readiness to retry the unresolved rape count, with a court date set for July 2.
While Weinstein remains behind bars, having served time from his previous now-overturned conviction, the outcome leaves the door open for yet another legal battle.
Jessica Mann reaffirmed her determination to testify again, stating: “I will never give up on myself and making sure my voice – and the truth – is heard.” The echoes of #MeToo continue to reverberate through the halls of justice.
