Inside Story

From Sketch to Symbol: Joey Jordison’s Original Slipknot Logo Resurfaces

A piece of heavy metal history has reemerged, as a hand-drawn version of Slipknot’s original logo by late drummer Joey Jordison has surfaced online. The image, shared via a tribute Instagram account dedicated to Jordison’s legacy, reveals the raw beginnings of what would become an iconic emblem in metal culture.

The post showcases a folded white paper with “ORIGINAL LOGO SLIPKNOT” boldly inked, followed by an early rendering of the band’s now-famous tribal “S” design. Fans flooded the comments with praise and emotion, honoring Jordison as not only a musical force but a creative visionary behind Slipknot’s identity. “Dude was lowkey a graphic designer,” one user noted, while others highlighted his deep emotional and artistic imprint on the band.

Jordison once shared in a 2017 Kerrang! interview that he drew the logo on his father’s desk—soaked in ink and passion—and brought it to band practice. The design resonated so strongly, several bandmates tattooed it before they were even signed.

As Slipknot continues to evolve with new music and line-up changes, Jordison’s hand-sketched legacy stands as a reminder of the band’s raw, DIY roots—an emblem not just drawn, but lived.
