Inside Story

Brian Wilson, Beach Boys Visionary and Pop Pioneer, Dies at 82

Brian Wilson, the visionary behind the Beach Boys’ revolutionary sound, has died at the age of 82. His family confirmed the news on June 11, 2025, honoring the life of a man whose music reshaped pop history and inspired generations of artists.

As the last surviving Wilson brother, Brian leaves behind an unmatched legacy. From the sun-drenched harmonies of “California Girls” to the lush introspection of Pet Sounds, his work defied conventions and elevated pop music into high art. His groundbreaking production on tracks like “Good Vibrations” blended rock with classical composition, ushering in a new era of studio innovation.

Despite personal battles with mental illness and addiction, Wilson’s resilience fueled a decades-long career filled with artistic highs. Diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder, he spent years in the care of controversial therapist Eugene Landy, until legal action freed him to continue his musical journey.

Wilson was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 and earned two Grammy Awards. After years away from the spotlight, he returned for a Beach Boys reunion in 2012 and completed his long-abandoned Smile project.

Brian Wilson wasn’t just a Beach Boy—he was the sound of a generation.
