Roy and Kathy Sakuma are celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the Roy Sakuma Ukulele Studios in 2024 and they believe it’s thanks to you…those who enjoy the ukulele, live music, and community.
It would be a souvenir toy, most times not tuned, that people would bring back from their Hawaii vacation. Roy Sakuma remembers hearing an instrumental song by Ohta-San on the radio when he was a teenager that captured his imagination and never let go. From there, he was determined for others to discover what the ukulele could be, could sound like, and also hoped others would pass along that love of music wherever they would go!
There are two versions of our talk story. The first is a full conversation going over the people that came into their lives like James Ingram and Danny Kaleikini and how Roy and Kathy Sakuma first met! So sweet! Also, just a few of the people that have helped them continue their vision of sharing the ukulele with Hawaii and the world…it’s about community.
This version of our talk story will air on “Hawaii Matters” on August 11, 2024. Hawaii Matters airs Sundays at 6:30am on our Pacific Media Group Oahu radio stations and you can find it on most podcast channels.
