Matt Cameron Exits Pearl Jam After Nearly Three Decades Behind the Kit

After nearly three decades of thunderous rhythm and iconic performances, drummer Matt Cameron has announced his departure from Pearl Jam. The 62-year-old musician revealed the news on social media, saying, “After 27 fantastic years, I have taken my final steps down the drum riser for the mighty Pearl Jam.”

Cameron joined the band in 1998 during a turbulent period marked by frequent drummer changes. Though not a founding member, he brought much-needed stability and quickly became a core part of Pearl Jam’s sound, debuting on the 2000 album Binaural.

Bandmates Jeff Ament, Eddie Vedder, Mike McCready, and Stone Gossard praised Cameron as a “true powerhouse” in a heartfelt statement, acknowledging the lasting impact he’s made. No replacement has been named.

Prior to Pearl Jam, Cameron was best known for his work with Soundgarden, helping define the Seattle grunge era. His ability to blend technical prowess with raw energy made him a standout in both bands.

Having just wrapped the Dark Matter tour, Cameron leaves behind a legacy cemented in rock history—steady, versatile, and always in the pocket. Fans and fellow musicians alike now await his next move.
