Foo Fighters have surprised fans with a decades-spanning musical time capsule—a newly completed cover of Minor Threat’s iconic punk anthem “I Don’t Wanna Hear It.”
Originally recorded instrumentally by the Foo Fighters in 1995, the track sat untouched for nearly 30 years until frontman Dave Grohl laid down vocals earlier this year. The cover, now available on YouTube, pays homage to Grohl’s punk rock roots and his enduring admiration for Ian MacKaye and the legendary Minor Threat.
Grohl has long expressed his reverence for the Washington D.C. hardcore pioneers, famously writing MacKaye a fan letter as a teenager. In past interviews, Grohl credited Minor Threat for defining hardcore’s intensity and ethos, particularly their no-frills, straight-edge message.
The release arrives during a quiet period for the Foo Fighters following their 2023 album But Here We Are, their first project after the tragic loss of drummer Taylor Hawkins. The band is set to return to the stage this October, though drummer Josh Freese, who briefly filled in for Hawkins, will not be part of the lineup.
The cover serves as both a tribute to Grohl’s musical beginnings and a reminder of punk’s lasting influence on rock’s biggest acts.
