Oahu safety reminders ahead of New Year’s Eve firecrackers (December 27, 2021)

Posted by kathywithak on December 27, 2021 in Kathy With a K

New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day firecrackers on Oahu are allowed to be ignited between 9 p.m. on December 31, 2021 through 1 a.m. January 1, 2022.

To buy and ignite firecrackers on Oahu, you need to purchase a permit online (The 12/31/2021-1/1/2022’s permit requests are now closed).

“During fireworks activity, people with asthma and respiratory problems are advised to stay indoors, turn on the air conditioner, avoid strenuous outdoor activities, drink plenty of fluids, and take medications as prescribed.” (DOH urges fireworks safety measures during New Year celebrations. [December 29, 2017, Hawaii State Department of Health])

HAWAII PACIFIC HEALTH 7 Fireworks Safety Tips – Safety first and always! Have a water source nearby, like a hose or bucket of water and be aware of your surroundings, including where you last saw your friends and family standing nearby.

Asthma is more than “having a hard time catching (my) breath”. The air quality indoors and outdoors can impact the quality of one’s lifestyle. Watch this video below to learn more:

HAWAIIAN HUMANE SOCIETY Pet Safety Tips – If you find a lost pet (micro chipped, with or without a collar and I.D. tag), you can report them online HERE.

Whether you are igniting firecrackers or are part of the clean up crew, take care of one another. Keep hydrated with lots of water, protect your eyes and ears, and take into account the traffic flow of pedestrians as well as motor vehicles. Have a safe and smart New Year’s Eve celebration, wherever you will be!
